Casaday

Casaday Costume Company
Feb. 2021 - May 2022

I am hired on as an Assistant Costumer, part-time. I am responsible for checking out rentals, helping pull stock for shows (when necessary), repairs, new constructions, cleaning and organizing the vast collection. I have altered, created and redressed hats, constructed a Civil War era hoop skirt, created a lively puppet, converted dresses into corset-backs for versatility, repaired various garments, and so much more. While here I have found a love of hats and feathers in my crafting wonderland. I have become familiar with our rental program that is based in Microsoft Access. In the program I can add customers, put a new rental under their name, fill out the billing info. and record/process payments. I also help coordinate the calendar by scheduling new appointments. I aim to do my best when assisting customers find what they might not know they are looking for. It always brings me joy when they return saying they were the hit of the function or won top 3 in a costume contest.

FST

Florida Studio Theatre

April 2019-March 2020

My internship was supposed to be a year long contract starting and ending in April but due to COVID regulations and hazards, the theatre was closed for the health and safety of the interns, staff, actors and musicians; my contract was terminated early. In the time I spent there, I would say that I learned the most about my capabilities and capacity to learn and change quickly in various situations.

I was the first of two costume interns to arrive at Florida Studio Theatre, we were staggered and had different backgrounds and interests. In my time here I was able to gain much experience with costume crafts and dye work. I worked on musicals, children shows, straight plays and cabarets. As a costume intern I altered store bought clothing, made garments from cut patterns, distressed clothing, painted shoes, made and altered hats, crafted and repaired jewelry, assisted in fittings, pulled from stock, returned and organized stock, shopped for shows, show returns, laundry for shows, wig maintenance until they could be restyled by the wig experts, I assisted other interns who were assigned wardrobe duties or costume shop time, and the go-to person for show calls that needs a wardrobe person. I became the expert at returns and updating paperwork. We used a computer program called the Costume Bible to produce various paper work such as laundry schedules, actor measurement sheets, etc. after inputting the show's info. As an intern, I was also required to have other duties outside the costume shop and costume realm, which tested my endurance and patience for long days and various types of work. However, I was delightfully given the opportunity to volunteer to teach 2 introductory master classes for students attending the FST Jr. and Sr. Performers classes; one for lighting and the second for costumes, but due to the theatre shutting down the costume class was canceled.

I worked wardrobe on Music Man and American Mariachi.

For American Mariachi I learned to put on/pin wigs, pin mic packs into wig caps, quick-change wigs, after-performance care for wigs and was part of the team to paint the alcohol-based black-light reactive paint onto Carmen, played by Stephanie Swift Molina, and Amalia, played by Diana Burbano.

The Red Series which started with Maria de Buenos Aires, Costume Design by Ingrid Helton and ended with Charlie Parker's Yardbird, Costume Design by CeCe Sickler. I pulled from stock, worked on the wardrobe crew, stitched, painted, and helped with paperwork.

Our Main Stage series started with La Traviata, costumes rented from Malabar Limited; Silent Night, Costume Design by Melissa Nicole Torchia; and ended with Le Nozze di Figaro, Costume Design by Allen Charles Klein. I assisted the shop head with the rental of La Traviata. I went from over-hire to part-time production warehouse assistant.

During the summers I set up and ran the weekly summer movie event in downtown Saint Joseph, MI.

I pulled gear for rentals, packed trucks, and kept the warehouse organized.

I operated small soundboard and mic events like banquets and presentations as well as projections set up and operation, mostly for videos and slide presentations.

I was pulled for wardrobe calls once the company obtained the contract for Lake Michigan College's event spaces and theaters.

I worked with the Installation Department to install and/or assemble production equipment, such as wireless mic systems and paging systems, in various schools and businesses.

My favorite event was the Saint Joseph (county in Indiana, not Michigan) CEO student entrepreneur presentation I worked. Its theme was the river walk park. This event was only lit with theatrical lighting fixtures. A fun project I did was making wire mesh hanging banners for bouncing light off of.
